We should all know that 220 V AC current is transformed by a transformer and converted to DC by a rectifier. Ideally, all AC components should be filtered out so that the output voltage of the filter circuit is only one DC voltage. However, since the filter circuit is a passive circuit, the filtering effect is impaired after connection to the load. For electronic circuits that do not require high stability, the rectified and filtered DC voltage can be used as power supply.

Although the AC voltage after rectification and filtering becomes a DC voltage with a small percentage of AC voltage, its mean value also changes if the mains voltage fluctuates or load changes. The function of the voltage regulator circuit is to make the output DC voltage substantially free from the influence of mains voltage fluctuations and load changes to obtain a sufficiently high stability.
